Té de Plátano

Té de Plátano is a soothing, naturally sweet herbal tea made from the peels of ripe plantains and a touch of cinnamon. It’s a traditional home remedy known in many Latin households for its calming properties and digestive benefits.
This tea is incredibly simple to prepare and a great way to reduce food waste by using the peels you’d normally discard. The result is a warm, slightly earthy brew with subtle hints of sweetness and spice—perfect for winding down at the end of the day.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 plantain peels, washed really well before peeling
  • 1/2 of a cinnamon stick
  • 3 cups water
  • Sugar, to taste (optional)

Instructions

  • Simply add the plantain peels, cinnamon stick, and water to a pot and bring to a boil.
  • Once it reaches a boil, pour the tea into two mugs and add sugar to taste if desired.
  • Enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Make sure the plantains are ripe and the peels are thoroughly washed to remove any wax or residue.
  • You can steep the tea longer for a stronger flavor or add more cinnamon for extra warmth.
  • This tea is often enjoyed without sweetener, but a small amount of honey or panela also complements the flavor nicely.
  • Drink before bed to help relax—many people find it soothing for digestion and sleep.
  • Avoid using green plantain peels, as they can be bitter and tougher to steep.
