Equipment

Ingredients

  • 4 limes, preferably thin-skinned, cut into 8 wedges each
  • cups cold water
  • ½ cup sugar, to taste
  • cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 10.5 oz jar of guava fruit spread
  • 1 cup coconut milk, chilled
  • 6 –8 oz rum or tequila
  • Ice cubes, for serving
  • Fresh lime slices, for garnish

Instructions

  • Add the lime wedges, cold water, sugar, and condensed milk to a blender. Blend 5–8 seconds until the limes are chopped but not pulverized – over-blending will make the drink bitter.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher, pressing the pulp firmly to extract all the liquid. Discard the pulp.
  • Rinse the blender. Pour the strained lemonade back in and add the guava fruit spread, coconut milk, and rum or tequila. Blend on high until completely smooth and fully incorporated.
  • Fill glasses with ice, pour the cocktail over, and garnish with fresh lime slices. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Thin-skinned limes are essential here, thick-skinned limes have more bitter pith and will throw off the flavor even with a short blend time.
  • The 5–8 second blend rule is not a suggestion. Over-blending the lime wedges releases bitter compounds from the peel that you cannot fix after the fact.
  • Taste before adding alcohol and adjust the sugar or condensed milk to your liking,  guava spreads vary in sweetness by brand.
  • This recipe makes a big batch, but the base (without the alcohol) can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Add the rum or tequila right before serving.
